3.17 – Compressed Gas Cylinders

Compressed gas cylinders are stored under pressure; therefore, they should be handled with care to prevent rupturing.  The following rules shall be followed.

1. Compressed gas cylinders shall always be handled as if full.
2. Cylinders shall not be dropped or permitted to bump together during transportation.
3. Cylinders shall be kept on end and strapped or chained securely.
4. Cylinders shall not be stored or placed near excessive heat.
5. Safety rupture discs shall not be tampered with.
6. When welding or cutting – sparks, molten metal, electric current, excessive heat or flames – shall not be allowed to come in contact with the cylinder or attachments.
7. Reverse gas flow (check valves and flash back arrestors shall be used in all oxy-fuel systems).
8. Oil and grease shall not be used as a lubricant on valves, attachments or oxygen cylinders.  Oxygen cylinders and fittings shall be kept away from grease and oil, including that from hands, gloves or clothing.
9. Oxygen shall never be used as substitute for compressed air.  When the cylinder is empty the pressure regulator shall be removed, valve closed tightly and the protection cap put on (unless integral guard is provided) cylinders shall be tagged ‘empty.’
