4.07 – Repair & Maintenance
POLICY
Griffin Properties Ltd. will make all reasonable attempts to ensure all tools, machines or equipment are adequately repaired/maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and/or OHS Regulation 4.3 so they are capable of safely performing the functions for which they are used.
PROCEDURE
General
- All assessments/repairs/maintenance will be conducted by experienced personnel or qualified technicians who are familiar with the workings of the tool, machine, or equipment.
- Wherever practicable, the site supervisor or designate of each worksite will establish an area away from regular work activities for storing damaged/defective tools, machines, and equipment awaiting repair/maintenance.
Assessment
- Any tool, machine, or equipment deemed unsafe for operation and removed from service will be assessed to determine if it is practicable to repair/maintain it.
- If the tool, machine, or equipment is beyond reasonable repair/maintenance, it will be rendered permanently inoperable and disposed of immediately.
- If the tool, machine, or equipment is fit for repair/maintenance, it will immediately be tagged, stored in the designated location, and not used until safe for operation.
- Prior to sending any tool, machine, or equipment for repairs, the person who conducted the assessment will complete Section 1 of the Repairs & Maintenance Record.
Tagging
- All tags used to identify tools, machines, or equipment that have been deemed unsafe for operation and removed from service will meet the following criteria:
- a) constructed of material appropriate to worksite conditions
- b) securely fastened
- c) visible
- d) legible
- In addition to (1) tags will contain the following information:
- a) marked “Do Not Use”
- b) description of the problem
Repair and Maintenance
- All tools, machines or equipment will be repaired/maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and/or industry best practices.
- A description of all repairs/maintenance conducted for each tool, machine, or equipment will be documented in Section 2 of the Repairs & Maintenance Record; the completed form will accompany the equipment to the worksite for re-introduction into service.
Re-Introduction
- Prior to a tool, machine, or equipment being re-introduced into service, the site supervisor or designate will:
- a) inspect the equipment to ensure there is no outstanding damage/defects
- b) review the Repairs & Maintenance Record to ensure accuracy
- c) remove the tag
- d) complete Section 3 of the Repair & Maintenance Record
- All completed Repair & Maintenance Records will be readily available for review by the operator at all times.
Training
All employees will receive documented onsite training of the following:
- a) policy and procedure
- b) practical hands-on demonstration
