8.1 – Orientations

Definitions

“New” means any person who is:

  • new to the workplace
  • returning to a workplace where the hazards in that workplace have changed during the worker’s absence
  • affected by a change in the hazards of a workplace
  • relocated to a new workplace if the hazards in that workplace are different from the hazards in the worker’s previous workplace

General

  1. Orientations are required for all employees, workers, and members of the public wishing to gain access to the worksite unless accompanied at all times by an experienced company representative.
  2. Orientations will only be conducted by an experienced company representative; each person being oriented will be given an opportunity and encouraged to ask questions or review a specific topic in more detail throughout the process.
  3. Orientations will be used only as a tool to help persons gain a timely understanding of important safety-related information, and will not be used under any circumstance as a substitute for required training, demonstration, or instruction.

Employee Induction

  1. New employees will complete the following at head office prior to first working onsite:
  2. In addition to (1), the person conducting the employee induction will:
    • verify training/certification records for each new employee
    • document all training/certification information on the Company Rules form
    • add a copy of all training/certification records to the new employee’s file
    • update the electronic data system

Employee Orientation

  1. The site supervisor or designate will ensure each new employee receives an employee orientation prior to beginning work onsite.
  2. When the employee is clear and understands what has been presented, he/she will sign the Employee Orientation; all completed orientations will be filed/filed/kept in the worksite filing system.

Employee Mentoring/Trades Training

  1. All non-ticketed employees new to the industry will be mentored and/or participate in the trades training program.
  2. The site supervisor or designate will ensure all mentored employees are partnered with an experienced company representative who is available at all times.
  3. The mentoring program will remain in effect until the employee has demonstrated the ability to recognize hazards at the worksite and work competently on their own.

Full Access Orientation

  1. The site supervisor or designate will ensure each new non-employee receives a full-access orientation whenever the person will:
    • be regularly onsite, or
    • require full site access
  2. When the person is clear and understands what has been presented, he/she will sign the Full Access Orientation record; the completed document will be filed/kept in the worksite filing system.

Limited Access Orientation

  1. The site supervisor or designate will conduct a limited access orientation for any new non-employee who will be onsite for a short duration, for a specific purpose, and does not require full site access.
  2. When the person is clear and understands what has been presented, he/she will sign the Limited Access Orientation record; the completed document will be filed/kept in the worksite filing system.
